At the Central Bus Station in Riga, there's a constant flow of Ukranians arriving. They have managed to flee through Russia from the occupied parts of Ukraine. Most are on their way to other parts of Europe and arrive confused and tired.

Young Folks

At a small counter in the main hall, the volunteer organization Young Folks has a welcome point for help. Iryna is one of the Young Folks. She is from Ukraine and most of her time is spent helping here. “I’m only 13. I can’t donate money for the Ukrainian army, but I can support and help by donating my time,” she explains.

On February 24, she immediately left Odessa and crossed the border to Moldova at 5.00 am in the morning. She was with her parents, an older brother, his wife and their 9-month-old baby. They were supposed to continue to another brother in the USA, but because the baby didn’t have a passport, they couldn’t. Months later, after lots of challenges and many stops in different countries, they ended up in Latvia.

Dedication

Iryna is a powerful and dedicated teenager with many interests. She used to take painting and drama classes and courses in informatics. Despite her young age, she herself used to teach people of all ages ceramics too. One of her greatest passions when living in Odessa. “I lost what had me feeling best when we had to leave,” Iryna states after telling about her life before.

In Riga, she has arranged ceramic courses for the Ukranian kids during the summer, but she misses home, the ceramics studio, her friends and her grandparents. Uncertain of when and if she will be going back.

The future

When thinking of the future, she gets worried. There is still war, the economy is bad and rebuilding is gonna take a long time. “War is terrible. I’m not a politician, but there is no reason to kill people. This should not be happening. Especially in a modern world, because everything nowadays can be solved with words,”  Iryna is precise when choosing her own words.

Finding the meaning

The sun sets and for Iryna it is yet another day spent at the bus station helping people. Her mom arrives in a car to pick her up. Her parents have always supported her in all she has been doing. Before driving away, she says, “I really can’t change anything about the war, but I can help people. This is meaningful… No matter what, we should not give up, and move forward. Hope always dies last”.

МОЛОДЬ

За невеликою стійкою в головному холі волонтерська організація "Молоді люди" організувала пункт прийому допомоги. Ірина - одна з "Молодих людей". Вона родом з України і більшість свого часу проводить тут, допомагаючи біженцям. "Мені лише 13 років. Я не можу жертвувати гроші на українську армію, але я можу підтримувати і допомагати, жертвуючи свій час", - пояснює вона.

24 лютого вона негайно виїхала з Одеси і о 5.00 ранку перетнула кордон з Молдовою. З нею були батьки, старший брат, дружина брата та їхня 9-місячна дитина. Вони повинні були продовжити шлях до іншого брата, що живе в США, але через те, що у дитини не було паспорта, вони не змогли здійснити цей план. Через кілька місяців, після безлічі проблем і багатьох зупинок у різних країнах, вони опинилися в Латвії.

ПРИСВЯЧЕННЯ

Ірина - сильний і цілеспрямований підліток, і має багато захоплень. Вона відвідувала гуртки малювання та театрального мистецтва, курси інформатики. Незважаючи на свій юний вік, вона сама навчала людей різного віку кераміці - одне з її найбільших захоплень, коли вона ще жила в Одесі. "Коли нам довелося поїхати- я втратила те, що давало мені найкращі відчуття", - ділиться Ірина після розповіді про своє попереднє життя.

Влітку, у Ризі вона організувала курси кераміки для українських дітей, але все ж вона сумує за домом, керамічною студією, друзями, бабусею і дідусем. Вона не знає, коли повернеться і чи повернеться додому взагалі.

МАЙБУТНЄ

Коли вона думає про майбутнє, її охоплює тривога. Війна триває, економіка країни в поганому стані, а відбудова займе багато часу. "Війна - це жахливо. Я не політик, але я знаю, що немає причин вбивати людей. Цього не повинно відбуватися. Особливо в сучасному світі, адже зараз все можна вирішити за допомогою слів", - намагається підібрати слова Ірина.

ЗНАЙТИ СЕНС

Сонце сідає, і для Ірини це ще один день, проведений на автостанції, де вона допомагає людям. За нею приїжджає мама на машині. Батьки завжди підтримували її в усьому, що вона робила. Перед від'їздом вона каже: "Я не можу нічого змінити у війні, але я можу допомагати людям. Це має сенс... Незважаючи ні на що, ми не повинні здаватися, а повинні рухатися вперед. Надія завжди вмирає останньою".
